Jimi ni Sugoi!

Koetsu Garu Kono Etsuko (2016)

Synopsis

A fashion-forward woman who dreams of working for a magazine called, "Lassy," must work as a proofreader in order to achieve her goal.

Exciting moments

It's time for some more Ishihara Satomi! I finished watching 5-ji Kara 9-ji Made (2015) last week and picked this drama to watch because it has the same female lead plus Suda Masaki as the male lead! Masaki is from my favorite Japanese drama Todome No Kiss (2018), so I was extremely excited to see him play a different persona.

Fortunately, the two had excellent chemistry. Their scenes felt natural and enjoyable to watch. It was refreshing to see the two main characters like each other right away, rather than the usual "hate to friends to lovers".

Honestly, I was most eager to see Masaki but Satomi is so unexplainably beautiful in every drama she's in. Her character, Etsuko, was not only a stunning fashionista but was also brave and stood up for what she believed in. I liked how inspirational she was to everyone around her. Her outfits were very cute as well!

The cons

I was hoping the relationship between Etsuko and Yukito was going to be the main story, but this drama is 80% about her job and 10% about her love life. Yukito isn't really shown in the first episode and throughout the drama, his scenes with Etsuko aren't long enough.

The plot wasn't compelling to me. It's great to see Etsuko face many challenges and solve them independently, but I wasn't invested. The storyline wasn't dull, but I felt the most excited when Yukito was on screen.

It reminded me of Mop Girl (2007), where each episode was a different problem to be faced relating to their job without much romance. Except instead of an interesting concept thrown in to make it more fun such as time travel, Jimi ni Sugoi! is essentially about Etsuko fixing issues pertaining to her career.

Overall thoughts

If you're looking for romance, there is only a tiny bit in this one. The cute moments are worth watching, but if you're like me who enjoys dramas primarily for the romantic relationships then you might want to find a different show to watchThe actors do a wonderful job though, especially Ishihara Satomi, who shows a wide range of emotions.

In summary, this one has helpful life lessons to always question what you doubt and work your hardest to accomplish your goals. It's a charming drama but I wouldn't watch it again. Only the cute Yukito and Etsuko moments :)

Final Score: 2 Pulses out of 5

Kiss-O-Meter

1/5

There is only one kiss in this drama and it's not even between the main leads!! There was a special made in 2017 that I should watch. Hopefully, they kiss in it!
